Atatiana’s Jefferson’s life was taken at her family home on Oct. 12 2019 by a Fort Worth police officer while she was playing video games with her 8 year old nephew. The family is turning their home where the tragedy took place into a community STEM education center in Fort Worth, TX and calling it the Atatiana Project.

As you may have been aware, I’ve been spending a lot of time with the Atatiana Jefferson family trying to raise awareness and funding for their community education center, The Atatiana Project. In case you don’t already know, in October of 2019 28 year-old Atatiana Jefferson was babysitting her 8 year-old nephew Zion. They were playing video games when a Fort Worth police officer, responding to a non-emergency call, shot and killed her in her own home. A neighbor had called in a wellness check because they had left their front door open for several hours. The officer responded by shooting her through their window, never once announcing he was an officer nor knocking on the front door. The officer, charged with murder and allowed to resign, was held for under 4 hours and then set free on a $200,000 bond. He has been free for over a year now with a tentative court hearing in August 2021, almost two years since Atatiana’s murder. Police reform is crucial and justice must be served.

I’ve been able to spend lots of time with this family now as a friend and “Uncle Jeff” as Zion calls me. I wrote my first song with lyrics about my time with this amazing and resilient family, even shaped some footage from an event to accompany it as a music video. I did this to raise awareness for their family as well as to raise funding for The Atatiana Project, which they are transforming Atatiana’s home (where the incident took place) into a STEM education center.

On December 18th, I am releasing ‘Song for Atatiana’ on my Bandcamp to raise money and awareness.
